THE DISCIPLINES IN THE PREPARATORY CYCLES

The main objective of the preparatory cycles is to provide a basic and solid scientific and technological teachings required by the competitive examinations for the access to the engineering studies. They also aim to develop the necessary aptitude and qualities to exercise the engineer's profession : rigour, critical attitude, method...

The disciplines MP, PC and T are open to Mathematics, Experimental Sciences and Technique sections. The discipline Biology is actually reserved only for the holders of baccalaureate in : experimental sciences.

All the disciplines allow the access to various institutions of engineering studies where the student can follow a wide range of specialities :

• The disciplines of MP, PC and T lead to engineering studies in science and technology which are assured by most institutions.
• The discipline Biology leads to engineering studies in science and agricultural technologies, in biology and geology. They comprise various specialities assured by many institutions.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

The teachings in preparatory cycles require a good experience in scientific and technological disciplines as well as a good assimilation capacity.

ACCES TO PREPARATORY CYCLES

The new holders of baccalaureate are admitted to preparatory cycles assured by the preparatory institutes for engineering studies (IPEI) and by certain institutions of agricultural higher education, in accordance with the modalities and criterias of the academic orientation. The candidates to preparatory cycles assured by the preparatory institute of scientific and technical studies in La Marsa (IPSET) are chosen among the students in terminal classes in Mathematics section.

For the academic year 1997/1998, the whole institutions in charge of the preparatory cycles received more than 2500 new holders of baccalaureate. This number is continuously increasing thanks to the creation of new IPEI.

LENGTH OF STUDIES

In the preparatory cycles, the studies comprise a two-year scientific, technological and complementary teachings. Organized on a three-monthly base, these teachings include courses, guided works and practical works with a weekly charge between thirty and thirty three hours, it depends on the discipline.

ENGINEERING CURRICULA

The two following tables indicate the teachings foreseen as well as the weekly course requirements (number of hours per week) for every discipline.

EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS

The aptitudes of the students and their acquisition of the knowledge are made regularly and continuously through :

• written tests and examinations at end-of-term
• Oral interrogations : each subject is submitted at least on oral interrogation per term.

The three-monthly results are determined by taking into account the following grading grid :

Passing from the first to the second year in the preparatory cycle is decided by the class-council according the annual results and the student's aptitudes during the year. The failure is authorized only once in the second year.
