The studies for obtaining the national diploma of doctor in medicine last seven years. They comprise a first cycle and a second one.

FIRST CYCLE
It comprises a teaching relating to the healthy individual, to biological and environmental mechanisms of development of health problems as well as to the methodology permitting to find out a solution for individual and community medicines.

The studies in the first cycle last two years totalizing, in addition to the training periods, at least 1000 hours of theoretical and practical teachings divided up as follows: Teaching in fundamental sciences : (Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Genetics…), community medicine, semiology, first aid.

The first cycle foresees training periods as well : trainings in the community and hospitals (initiation to nurse-care and semiology).

SECOND CYCLE
The second cycle concerns clinical training and the teaching of how to cure various pathologies affecting different organs and apparatus from the scientific (study of mechanisms and interactions), clinic (symptoms and signs, means and methods of diagnosis), therapeutic and preventive angles. This cycle lasts five years and totalizes, in addition to the training periods, 1100 hours of theoretical and practical teachings of the pathology under the scientific, public health clinic and legal angles spread over the three first years.

The two last years are reserved to internship which comprises six periods of four months each that the student spends in the care, rehabilitation and prevention services under the supervision of professors (hospitalo-universitaires).  

SPECIALITY
From the first year of internship, the students have the possibility to sit for a competitive examination of résidanat, which usually takes place in December. The program and the nature of the tests are fixed up by ministerial regulation.

The students have the possibility to choose, according to their aptitudes and grading, a speciality among those appeared on a predetermined list. The résidanat lasts four years during which the student receives a theoretical and practical training. A final examination is organized. The number of medical specialities is 47 : 26 in medicine and medical specialities; 14 in surgery and surgical specialities; 7 in biological and fundamental sciences.
