DEFINITION
The word "music" has various definitions and one can say that the musical phenomenon is composed of three distinct and complementary activities : musical composition, song and audition. Music is a language, a science, a technique and an art; it has a great power of expression and influence on the soul. Belonging to the human sciences and the exact sciences, it's an essential instrument for education, permitting the development of intellectual and physical skills and capabilities.

ADMISSION
The access to the first year of the first cycle can be made through one of the two following modes:
a) The academic orientation system (baccalaureate, all sections). It has to be said that in addition to the score, the access to this discipline is conditioned by the success in an aptitude test (except for those having obtained an Arabic music diploma).
b) The reorientation competitive entrance exam. It is open to those who have obtained their baccalaureate in the two years preceding the competitive examination and comprises the following tests:

  • Oral test : music reading, rudiments of music, song, general culture.

  • Practical test : instrument.
  • Written test : dictation.

REQUIRED SKILLS
Practice of music, concrete practical and scientific capabilities that can facilitate the specialization of the student in this field.

LENGTH OF STUDIES
The studies last four years divided in two cycles:

  • The first cycle lasts two years, at the end of which a first cycle diploma of musical studies is delivered.

  • The second cycle lasts two years, at the end of which a B.A degree (maîtrise) of music is delivered.
    (
    Attendance in the theoretical and practical subjects is compulsory).

FIELDS OF STUDY

  • Theme 1: A general training in human and exact sciences related to the musical field.

  • Theme 2: Practical works related to research.
  • Theme 3: Languages (Arabic, French, English).
  • Theme 4: Theoretical training specialized in music and musicology
  • Theme 5: Practical training specialized in music

EXAM REQUIREMENTS
The studies' regime in the Institute is submitted to continuous control and to a final examinations in two sessions: main one and remedial one.
Is admitted to the superior year the student who obtains an average equal or superior to 10/20, provided that he obtained an average superior to 5/20 in all the subjects.
The
final examination comprises in addition:
        1 - Graduation thesis.
        2 - A representation in solo in the presence of a specialized jury (for the speciality's instrument).

PROFESSIONAL PROSPECTS
There are many prospects for the graduates of the Institute:

  • The musical profession in all its fields.

  • Employment in the clubs, the youth and culture houses.
  • Teaching music in high schools and specialized institutes

ACQUIRED SKILLS

  • Play one or more musical instrument.

  • Knowledge of the rules and history of the music, notably the Arab one.
  • Openness on world music.
  • Knowledge of composition and creativity mechanisms.
  • Knowledge of the mechanisms of the scientific research in musicology.

In the Higher Institute
of
Music there are a library, a sound library, an audio-visual laboratory, a workshop for repairing and making music instruments, a computer unit ( for computer science basic teaching and research in music field) and an audio-visual unit.
The Institute also publishes a musical review "Rawafid Musiqia" and has a specialized musical group.
