DEFINITION
Unlike what the arabic designation may suggest (Handasa Mi'marya), the architect is not properly an engineer. The architect imagines, conceives and establishes plans of constructions and spaces. He assures the follow up of his conceptions, be they houses or industrial, touristic or public buildings. For all these operations, he takes into account the cultural, technical, economic, social and juridical elements of his environment.

The work of the architect is a creative one based on cultural and aesthetical dimensions to which are adapted appropriate technical solutions.

The architect works also on the restoration of old buildings and the maintenance of the architectural patrimony.

ADMISSION
The access can be made through one of the two following modes: 

a) The academic orientation system (baccalaureate all sections and mainly baccalaureates in mathematics, experimental sciences and technical sciences).

b) The reorientation competitive entrance exam is open to those who have obtained their baccalaureate in the two years preceding the competitive examination. It comprises a test of general culture and a test in drawing art.

REQUIRED SKILLS
The architecture is in the crossroad of many disciplines. So the skills needed by the architect are:

  • A general culture and a synthetic capacity (philosophy).

  • An artistic and aesthetic sensitiveness (sensitivity, creativity, taste, good perception of the space, excellent dispositions concerning the colors and the shapes).
  • Good aptitudes in exact sciences.

LENGTH OF STUDIES
Lasting six years, the architecture's studies are divided in two cycles :
    1- The first cycle lasts two years at the end of which a professional training is required and a first cycle diploma (DEUPC) in architecture is delivered.
    2- The second cycle lasts three years to which is added one year of professional training. At the end of this cycle, a National Diploma of Architecture is delivered.

The attendance in the workshops, integrated courses, trainings, seminars and studies' visits is compulsory.

The student who is absent in 10% of the time reserved to a given teaching cannot take part in the examination of the concerned subject in  the main session. .

EXAM REQUIREMENTS
The teachings are submitted to the continuous control regime. The examinations are organized in two successive sessions:

  • Main session, yearly or half-yearly, depending on the case.

  • Control session for the students who failed in the main session. This session is organized one week at least after the announcement of the main session's results at the end of the academic year.

The results of the continuous control count for 50% of the general average.

The student succeeds when he or she obtains a general average equal or superior to 10/20 in the yearly modules.

FIELDS OF STUDY
The architecture studies are made up of workshops, integrated courses, seminars, trainings, studies' visits and creativity, renovation and restoration exercises.

Each academic year comprises compulsory modules stretching over one or two semesters. These are the modules:

  • Methodology of the plan: (analysis of the architectural space, development of the architectural culture, development of the aptitude of creating and renovating on the basis of various elements).

  • Technical expression of art drawing: (drawing, computer science, plastic expression...).
  • Sciences and technology: (mathematics, building physics, strength of materials, construction, organization of building sites, equipments...).
  • Environment, human and social sciences: (history of art, history of architecture, English, sociology, natural trust conservation, environment conservation).
  • Law and management: (construction and town planning legislations, preservation rules of goods and individuals, public markets legislations, urban planning regulations.)

    Trainings :

The second year students of the first cycle and the second year students of the second cycle are submitted to practical works on the field. In certain cases, trainings may be organized abroad.

Professional trainings: the second year of the second cycle is reserved to a professional training in a private or public institution. A report should be prepared at the end of the training. The effective duration of the training shouldn't be, in any case, inferior to eight months.

PROFESSIONAL PROSPECTS
The architect may have his own business by opening a cabinet. He may also work for private institutions (companies, research consultancy) or public institutions (ministries, local communities...).

ACQUIRED SKILLS

  • Architectural conception and creation based on the national and international cultural patrimony

  • Implementation of building plans.
  • Assessment of construction and development plans.
  • Consultancy-services for individuals and institutions concerning construction plans.
  • Coordination with engineers to find technical solutions in various fields (civil engineering, reinforced concrete, metallic structures.
  • Oral and written communication skills to defend one's plan.
  • Aptitude to work within a multi-disciplinary group.
