DEFINITION
The job of the specialist in documentation, bibliotheconomics, archivistics (DBA), also called specialist in information sciences, is to achieve all technical works linked to the exchange of documents and informations whatever their format (books, reviews, newspapers, audio-visual supports, encyclopedias, articles, cards, graphics, administrative archives...). He proceeds to the bibliographic description and catalogues the documents. The different tasks of this process are : the gathering, the treatment, the classification, the analysis of the content and the handling of the information so as it takes the form of files, index and lists easy to consult. So treated, the information is then stockpiled on its traditional supports (paper), or electronic support (data base, CD-ROM...).

The specialist in information sciences has also the task to put the information at the disposal of they who need it : researchers, teachers, students, pupils, deciders, administrative officials...

ADMISSION
The access is possible at the beginning of each of the two teaching cycles.

1 - The access to the first year of the first cycle is possible through :

the academic orientation system (all types of baccalaureate, but essentially "Letters" baccalaureate );

the competitive reorientation examination (written and oral test in general culture).

2 - The access to the second cycle is open to two categories of students :

      a - the students of the DBA first cycle having obtained an average equal or superior to 10.5/20 in the examinations of the second year;

      b - the holders of a first cycle diploma (DEUPC) in other disciplines. In this case, the applicants are submitted to a competitive examination
          (written and oral tests in general culture).

REQUIRED SKILLS
Good aptitudes in languages, good general culture and good sense of organization and analysis.

LENGTH OF STUDIES

The studies in DBA comprise two cycles:
    1- The first cycle lasts two years. At the end of the second academic year, the student obtains a DEUPC in DBA, provided that he has an average equal or superior to 10/20 in the examinations.
    2-
The second cycle lasts two years. At the end of this cycle, a B.A. degree (Maîtrise) in DBA is delivered

EXAM REQUIREMENTS

All the teaching subjects are submitted to continuous control regime and half-yearly examinations. The average of the semester is calculated as follows : average of the continuous control, coefficient 1, and the average of the half-yearly examinations, coefficient 3.

The annual general average is the arithmetic average of the half-yearly one.

FIELDS OF STUDY
     1- 
Language and expression techniques.
    2- Specialized teachings in DBA : documentary research, cataloguing, archivistics...
    3- Complementary subjects : Tunisian administrative organization, text treatment, initiation to the communication techniques, information networks, socio-professional environment.

The studies comprise equally practical trainings in public and private companies.

The HID publishes the "Revue Maghrébine de Documentation" (bi-annual).

The HID's library counts 15700 titles (6500 in arabic, 9200 in french, 100 Periodicals in arabic and 220 in french).

In 1999/2000, the HID moved to the university Campus in Manouba.
